Hat Care
Storing your Hat
Store your hat upside down on its crown or on a peg on the wall to keep the shape. It is best to keep your hat stored in its Joël Joseph dust bag to avoid getting stains and/or dust build up.
Handling your Hat
Handle your hat by the crown when placing on and removing to maintain the stiffened brim. When handling the crown make sure to not apply too much pressure, unless of course it is our Hendrix hat, which is completely formable and can be shaped to however you wish to wear it!
How to Clean the Sweat Band
For make-up - Take a clean towel and dampen a corner, making sure to drain off any excess water. Flip the band up and gently wipe the band not getting water on the hat itself. Let band dry with hat upside down on crown.
For sweat - Make a solution of one tsp. clear detergent with one cup of water. Take a clean towel and dampen a corner, making sure to drain off any excess solution. Flip the band up and gently wipe the band not getting water on the hat itself. Repeat with clean water. Minimal amounts of water are needed. Let band dry with hat upside down on crown.
How to Remove Dust and Dirt
Remove dust and dirt by brushing with a soft brush. There are brushes made for wool felt hats. Go around entire brim in a slow counterclockwise motion.
To remove any lint or dust you can also use a lint roller. Rolling the brim and edge and then patting the crown to get it back to perfect condition.
How to Straighten the Brim
If your brim has been bent, no fret, you can get a straight brim back. Grab your iron, a white cloth ( white pillowcase preferable so there is no color transfer) and a clean flat surface. Smooth the pillowcase on top of brim and with the iron on low to med/low slowly follow the entire brim, not removing from the surface. Always keep the pillowcase between the iron and hat so no direct heat is on your hat. Do not try to iron the crown. Let hat cool for approx 10 min. Your hat should have that perfect straight brim again. If needed, you can touch up certain areas, or if did not flatten turn up the heat, go slowly when increasing the heat to not cause damage.
*Our hats all have stiffener added to create that stiff brim we are known for. Fix when necessary, but do not iron often as over time you can loose some of the stiffness.
What to Avoid
Wet Weather. Do not wear your hat on snowy, rainy days. If gets wet wipe off immediately. Let dry naturally to avoid ruining the shape.
*The Mesa, Kohen and Sloane hats have a polished finish that will react to water damage. If wet, wipe water off immediately. Once dry then take your soft bristle brush to soften any water marks.
Do not expose your hat to high heat, such as leaving in a hot car or by a fireplace, as the wool can shrink.
